Studying Conic Sections

We are starting the study of Conic Sections - figures created by cutting cones. Note: due to the half-day, the F-block section will be one class ahead until Memorial Day. That is why I am listing the assignments with day-on-topic rather than date. Homework will mostly be in Demana.

Day 1: Review of Ellipses (and Circles - the special ellipse)
HW p.622/623/3-30 by 3's, 42 (omit eccentricity)

Day 2: Review of Hyperbolas
HW p.632-634/3-36 by 3's, 45, 46, 48, 51-55 odd

Day 3: Parabolas
HW p.611-612/3-51 by 3's, 55, 58

Day 4: Focus-Directrix definition for all
HW B p.249/1-3, 9 and p.250-251/1-3,21,22 and D p.613/64-66

Day 5: Follow-up to Focus-Directrix work
HW finish handout

Day 6: Polar definition of conic sections
HW p.649-650/3-12 by 3's, 23, 27-43 odd

Day 7: Parametric definition of conic sections

Extra Complex Problems

On Friday we worked on a worksheet of extra Complex problems. They put together several ideas from all year. An answer key. can be downloaded though it is only answers, no hints. Ask me if you have questions. Remember, we are starting the study of Conic sections for one class before the Polar test on Wednesday.

Answer Key for May 6th Extra Problems

Today we had a worksheet dealing with extra problems with polar complex numbers and graphing. I am posting an answer key for the complex number questions. Typing up the answer key for the graphing was too tedious (and you have your calculator after all...). If you are taking an AP exam and cannot get to this by tomorrow, just get it done before the exam on Wednesday, May 12th.

cis - what is it, what is it for?

cis is a way of representing complex numbers in polar form. The math of complex numbers is actually much easier in polar form so we will spend several days playing with it. And then we have a test.

5/03 cis, Products and Quotients of Complex Numbers
       HW B p.406-407/10, 12, 15, 17, 24-31
5/05 Powers and Roots of Complex Numbers
       HW B p.410-411/4,5,9-14 and p.413/5,6,8,11-13
